Zoo de Barcelona

Zoo de Barcelona

Different native and exotic species, many of them endangered, live in the Barcelona Zoo. A visit to the zoo becomes a learning experience with inhabitants from around the world, as you discover its fauna: mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds… The attractions at the zoo make for an unforgettable, perfect day out for all the family.

Barcelona Zoo occupies over 14 hectares inside the Parc de la Ciutadella. It was founded in 1892 and located in buildings that had been used for the 1888 Universal Exhibition. The first fauna housed in the zoo came from the private collection of Lluís Martí Codolar, who kept them on his estate in the neighbourhood of Horta. Barcelona Zoo has been extended and redesigned over the past hundred years, with priority being given to the upkeep and reintroduction of species under threat of extinction and the improvement of the animals' living conditions.

Barcelona Zoo offers a number of educational programmes for children and adults designed to give them a greater understanding of wildlife. At the zoo you'll be able to observe how meerkats and large giraffes live and discover tropical birds. The kids can also play in the large children's park. As you walk through Barcelona Zoo, you'll come across modernista treasures, such as the fountain crowned by Joan Roig i Solé's sculpture, La Dama del Paraigües (The Lady with the Umbrella -1885), one of Barcelona's most exquisite and best-loved symbols.

Accessibility details

Reduced entry price for visitors with disabilities by presenting the degree of handicap certificate.
Visual impairment
The farm, also known as the Children's Zoo, is one of the facilities that youngest visitors love. As the majority of children live in cities and do not have the opportunity to interact with animals, the farm's principal objective is to allow contact between children and domestic and farm animals. So at set times, under the supervision of a zoo worker, children can enter the stables where the small goats or sheep are kept to stroke them and play with them for a while, or alternatively they can have a ride on a pony.

Motor impairment
There are three correctly signed reserved parking spaces for disabled badge holders inside the Parc de la Ciutadella. They are in front of the entrance to the zoo, next to the gate at the corner of Passeig Picasso and Avinguda Marquès de l’Argentera. There is also an accessible paying car park on Passeig Lluís Companys.

The grounds are equipped with ramps or, in the case of the Aquarama, a platform lift for the exclusive use of those in wheelchairs (maximum 70 cm x 75 cm, 200 Kg and no more than 5 wheelchairs at the same time).
